The driver who hit the gate of Chancellor Angela Merkel's office with his car may have been suffering from mental health problems during the incident, Berlin police said.

"We are looking into his motivation, if he was acting out of a mental state or if something else caused him to do it," a police spokesman told reporters in front of the chancellery on Wednesday.

The man is still in police custody and has been questioned, he added.
