Bangladesh is going to participate for the first time in the Asian Powerlifting Championship 2022 to be held in Dubai on 2-7 December.

A 10-member team of Bangladesh will be headed for the competition on 30 November.

Mominul Haque, general secretary of Bangladesh Powerlifting Association, said at a press conference at the Olympic Association Auditorium, Dhaka, on Saturday that the country's powerlifters are confident to have a good result in the competition.

"Powerlifting is completely new in the country. Many people do not even know about the sport. But those who are practicing it are very sincere. We have formed a team for this year's championship by selecting the best powerlifters in the country," he said.

This year, 470 participants from 29 Asian countries will compete in the championship including nine Bangladeshis.

Mominul Haque will lead the Bangladesh team and will also conduct matches as the only licensed powerlifting referee in the country.

"We have very limited facilities and equipment in the country for powerlifting. The sports is going ahead tremendously despite the limitations. We are hoping to win at least two medals in the competition," he added.
