PM hands over flats to 600 homeless families

With today’s inauguration, 600 families would get their new shelter in 20 just-built special structures having 32 flats with all modern amenities

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has handed over flats at Khurushkul Special Shelter Project in Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila to 600 homeless families, who are climate refugees.

The premier inaugurated the project by distributing the flats among the families from her official residence Gonobhaban via a video conference on Thursday.

"The government has taken initiatives to rehabilitate all the shelterless people of the country," said the prime minister at the inauguration programme.

The government has been constructing 139 five-storey buildings on 253 acres of land on the banks of Bakkhali River at Khurushkul, spending Tk1,800 crore.  More than 4,ooo climate refugee families will be rehabilitated there gradually.

Now construction of 20 buildings has been completed and the 600 families will be accommodated there.

Schools, colleges, madrasas, mosques, cyclone shelters, police outpost, community clinic and other civic facilities will be in the project.
