Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumers will have to pay an additional Tk49 for a 12kg cylinder provided by private operators in July.

The retail price of such a cylinder will be Tk891.

Besides, the prices of cylinders of other sizes have been fixed, with the price per kg set at Tk74.24.

The June price of a 12kg cylinder was adjusted at Tk842.

Prices had been adjusted based on that of LPG raw materials – propane and butane – in the world market and the new rates would be effective from July, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Chairman Abdul Jalil told a press conference on Wednesday.

The new tariffs were set based on the Saudi contract prices of propane and butane in June, which were $530 and $525 per tonne respectively.

On the other hand, the per litre auto gas price was re-fixed at Tk44 from Tk41.74 in June.

Retail prices of LPG cylinders provided by state-owned LP Gas Limited have not been changed as the costs of raw materials remain the same. The price of a 12.5kg LPG cylinder of this company will be Tk591.

The BERC chairman said the commission saw no problem in announcing new auto gas tariffs every month.

But the LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh said there was mistrust between retailers and consumers due to monthly changes in LPG prices.

Earlier, private LPG operators in the country used to set their own tariffs.

On 12 April, the BERC for the first time set the prices of public and private LPG, stating that it would adjust retail prices based on Saudi contract prices of propane and butane.

The LPG operators association has been objecting to such price adjustments since the beginning, which is why the tariff order is not fully implemented across the country.

Among others, BERC members Maqbool E-Elahi Chowdhury, Mohammad Abu Faruk, and Bazlur Rahman, its Secretary Rubina Ferdous and Deputy Director Kamruzzaman were present at the press conference.
