Marking the International Volunteer Day scheduled to be observed on 5 December, a coordinated initiative has been taken to felicitate some 15 volunteers of the country who played significant role in Covid-19 response.

The selected volunteers will be awarded with the IVD Bangladesh Volunteer Award, thanks to the initiative taken by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Co-operatives, Department of Youth Development, Ministry of Youth and Sports, UNV Bangladesh and WaterAid, said a press release.

The initiators have asked for applications from enthusiastic volunteers with a detailed guideline to evaluate their potential.

The top five volunteers will receive prize money of Tk1,00,000, Tk75,000, Tk50,000, Tk30000 and Tk20000 respectively, in addition to crests and certificates. Besides, 6th to 15th prize winners will receive crests and certificates.

Interested candidates have to primarily submit their personal information, along with activity description and few more details as per guided instruction, which can be found at www.unvolunteersbd.org or www.wateraid.org/bd and DYD's Facebook page /departmentofyouthdevelopmenthq also.

The application form is available at - https://rb.gy/kwcv9o.

The applications have to be submitted by 19 November.

Countries across the globe observe the International Volunteer Day to promote and support the spirit of volunteering.

The theme of the award initiative is "Volunteer for COVID-19 Response and Recovery".

LGRD Minister, Md Tazul Islam said volunteers have been playing an important role over socio-economic development for the country.

"During Covid-19 pandemic, thousands of volunteers came forward to support the country. This is important to recognize the untiring efforts of our great volunteers," he said appreciating the initiative.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Youth and Sports, Zahid Ahsan Russel said youth volunteers played a great role during the pandemic and they deserve to be recognised their valuable efforts.

The practice of recognising volunteers will inspire more volunteering activities in our society for good cause, he added.

Ms Hasin Jahan, country director of WaterAid said the award initiative aims to uphold the spirit of volunteerism among the youth of Bangladesh.

"Covid-19 hit us with a difficult challenge and youth enthusiasm we have stood stronger so far. I know this joint initiative will play a crucial role in bringing out more and more devoted volunteers towards response of any crisis," she said.

BENEATH THE SURFACE
The Dazzling Fake Flowers: Is there any alternative to artificial flowers while decorating homes, showrooms, offices and business establishments? Fresh flowers are undoubtedly beautiful, but they dry out quickly. Hence, the demand for plastic flowers is rising day by day. Traders said these lifelike silk flowers usually come from China and Thailand. The photo was taken from the 29th International Trade Fair of the Chattogram Chamber on Friday.
