Writ seeks directives to keep Soybean oil prices under control
Commerce secretary, director general of the Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection, and others have been made respondents in the writ
A writ petition was filed in the High Court seeking directives to form a monitoring cell and enact policies to keep current retail market Soybean oil prices under control.
Supreme Court lawyer Monir Hossain and two of his colleagues filed the writ on Sunday making the commerce secretary, the director general of the Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection and others, respondents.
"The hearing of the plea may take place on Monday," Advocate Monir Hossain told the media.
The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice SM Maniruzzaman is expected to hear the petition, he added.
Traders in Karwan Bazar alleged that importers are deliberately creating a crisis to raise oil prices, and that if prices are raised, the supply in the market will be fine again.
At Karwan Bazar and super shops in the capital, retailers have been charging buyers Tk15-Tk20 more from two days ago, while the price tag on the bottle shows Tk168 per litre.
Speaking at a programme in Tangail on Saturday, Agriculture Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said the government is strictly monitoring the market to keep prices of essential commodities under control.
