Wild elephant shot dead in Cox’s Bazar

A wild elephant was gunned down by miscreants in Eidgaon union of Cox's Bazar sadar upazila.

The elephant came in a pepper field near Fulchhari forest in search of food. Later, the animal was shot dead thinking it would damage the crop, reports Prothom Alo.

The elephant sustained bullet a little above of its left eye.

According to the forest department sources, the forest department staff came to know through local woodcutters that the body of the wild elephant was lying in the Rajghat bit area of the Fulchhari forest range on Sunday noon.

Later, an autopsy team led by Cox's Bazar Sadar Upazila Livestock Officer Lebu Lal Dutt reached the spot at around 4 pm and recovered the body.

The body of the elephant was buried in the ground after an autopsy at around 9 pm on Sunday.

Mostafizur Rahman, assistant veterinary surgeon of the safari park and also member of autopsy team, said that the female elephant, age around 35, was gunned down on December 17.

Earlier in November, four more wild elephants were killed by electric shocks and shots in the forests of Eidgaon, Chakaria and Ramu in Cox's Bazar.

Due to deforestation and cutting down of hills, there is a food crisis for wild elephants, according to sources.
