The VAT authorities in separate drives in the last two days seized 41 trucks in Tangail and realised Tk81 lakh in VAT from owners of goods the vehicles were carrying.

Dhaka West VAT Commissionerate seized the trucks in Mirzapur and Delduar upazilas on allegations of dodging VAT.

Of the vehicles, 40 were carrying bricks of 37 brick kilns and the other was transporting electric fans of BRB Cable's Lovely brand.

As per the VAT law, the brick kiln owners have to pay Tk1.80 lakh as part of the second installment by February 25.

There are 279 brick kilns under Tangail VAT division. As most of them evaded VAT, Dhaka West VAT Commissionerate officials conducted the drive in Mirzapur area and seized 40 trucks.

Later, they realised Tk80 lakh in VAT from the owners of the brick kilns through treasury chalan.

Besides, the fan-laden truck was heading for Delduar from Kushtia. As appropriate VAT invoices were not found in the vehicle, VAT officials seized it in Delduar and realised Tk1 lakh in VAT and also fines for dodging VAT.  All the seized trucks were later released.
