A mobile court has sentenced three young women to six months in jail for attempting to cast fake votes in the by-election to the chairman post of Chunta union parishad in Sarail upazila of the district.

The court, led by Executive Magistrate Firoza Parveen, handed down the verdict while conducting a drive in the Rasulpur Uttar Government Primary School polling centre around 3 pm on Tuesday.

The convicts are Sadia Akter, 20, Taiyiba Akter, 20, and Sumaiya Sultan, 20. All hail from Rasulpur village of the union.

The executive magistrate said the girls were trying to cast fake votes although it was found that there was no such name in the voter list for which they came to cast vote. Besides, one of them was identified to have already cast her vote.

The by-polls started at 10 am in the morning and will continue till 5 pm. Four candidates are vying for the chairman post.
