Not EC, BNP concerned over poll-time govt: Mirza Fakhrul
From the experience of last 15 years, it is clear that a democratic government will never come to power if election is not held under a neutral government
BNP is not worried about the newly-formed Election Commission (EC), rather its main concern is the election-time government.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said this at a protest rally organised by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Kalyan Front at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) auditorium in the capital on Sunday.
The rally was organised in protest at the communal remarks of Keraniganj Model Police Station OC Abdus Salam and the attack on BNP leader Nipun Roy Chowdhury.
Fakhrul said, "If the Awami League government remains in power during the next national election, rest assured that there would be no election. They will hold the election in the same manner they did during the last general election. Our only demand is that the election must be held under a caretaker or non-partisan government. This government must step down before that."
He said, "After coming to power, the Awami League government has completely destroyed the electoral system. The party itself demanded a caretaker government once and argued in favour of the system. But after coming to power, they realised that they would not win any election held by a caretaker government."
No alternative to movement to get rid of AL
Meanwhile, at a discussion at Ramna Engineers Institution auditorium on Sunday afternoon, Fakhrul said, "The Awami League government has to be toppled through struggle and movement. There is no alternative to movement to get rid of this autocratic Awami League government."
The discussion, "Role model of acceptable election under a neutral government", was organised by BNP's Celebration Committee for Golden Jubilee of Independence.
Fakhrul said that with the resignation of this government, a neutral election commission would be formed under a neutral government like they (caretaker government) empowered in 1991 and
The BNP leader said toppling the ruling government through a movement, a parliament and government will be formed with real public representatives. They would be elected through an election held by a non-partisan and neutral caretaker government. Only then, people of the country will be freed from the repression of the present government, and it will be possible to build the future of the nation.
The BNP secretary general said from the experience of the last 15 years, it is very clear that if elections are not held under a neutral government, a truly democratic government will never come to power.
