BNP opens its box of allegations whenever an election is announced; if their candidate wins, suddenly they're silent.

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud made the remarks when speaking to reporters on Saturday after conducting an inspection of the ongoing construction of Chattogram Port Connecting Road.

He said it is an old game they follow. They have won many local government elections. They continue their litany of complaints till their candidate wins. They're silent as soon as their candidate's victory is confirmed.

The minister said, "The BNP is alleging that the police are harassing their candidates, agents and party leaders in the Chattogram City Corporation elections, and that the ruling party is trying to exert its influence. However, people are confident that the Election Commission is trying its level best to fulfil its responsibilities properly. Like other city corporations and municipal elections in the country, Chattogram City Corporation elections will be fair and neutral."

"The CCC polls will be held, using Electronic Voting Machines; so, like other technology-based elections, these will also be held in a fair, free and impartial manner.

"The world is full of praise for Bangladesh's unprecedented development, under the able leadership of Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina. Unfortunately, one party in the country fails to acknowledge these achievements. BNP leaders and some intellectuals don't seem to be able to appreciate the government's development.

"From the words of the pro-BNP intellectuals, it is obvious that they are blind to the obvious development in the country. In the interest of all Bangladeshis, we hope this will change in the new year.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has always attached importance to the development of Chattogram. The Tk1b project to drive away waterlogging in the port city; construct roads connecting with the Outer Ring Road; construct the Karnafuli Tunnel - the sub-continent's first-ever river tunnel-road – construct the Bay Terminal and Chattogram Port Connecting Road: all are testament to this," the minister added.
