Four people including two brothers were killed and at least 20 others reportedly injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy in Magurasadarupazila.
The clash broke out between the supporters of two rival candidates of the upcoming Union Parishad election at Jagodal village in MaguraSadarupazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as member candidate, SaburMolla, 52; his brother, KabirMolla, 50; his cousin, Rahman Molla, 55; and Imran Hossain, 25.
Nine of the 20 injured have been admitted to the MaguraSadar Hospital.
According to locals, the current UP member of ward 3 of Jagdal union is Nazrul Islam, whose political opponent got the ruling Awami League's ticket to contend the upcoming polls. The decision led to tension between the followers of both leaders, resulting in Friday's clash. The two rivals group has been contesting over establishing supremacy in Magurasadarupazila.
Confirming the incident, Magura district Superintendent of Police Jahirul Islam said that additional police personnel were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.
"Anyone involved with the clashes will be brought to justice," the police super vowed.
