1 killed, 10 injured in Pabna Awami League factional clash

A man was killed and at least 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups over the formation of an Awami League committee in ward-9 of Gaurigram union in Pabna's Santhia upazila.

The deceased was identified as Alhaj Sheikh, 35, from Ghughudaha Purbapara village.

People from both the groups, carrying sticks and locally-made weapons, became embroiled in the clash in Ghughudaha Purbapara field in Gaurigram union on Thursday morning.

According to the locals, the dispute between the supporters of Sharbesh Sheikh and Moslem Master had been going on for some time over the formation of a committee of Awami League.

On 29 March, Sharbesh was elected president of the Awami League unit in ward-9 of Gaurigram union. This angered the Moslem and his supporters and led to the clash afterwards.

Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said several people, including Moslem, have been detained over the incident. The operation is going on and additional police have been deployed in the area.
