A person was killed and another injured in an explosion at a scrap shop in Shibganj Bazar of Netrokona's Durgapur upazila.

The incident took place at Kanchan Mia's scrap shop at Majid Market around 10:30 pm on Sunday.

What caused the explosion is still unknown. However, the locals and police suspect one of the old batteries of the easy bikes or autorickshaws in the scrap shop may have exploded.

The deceased was identified as Sobuj Mia, 40, who was an auto rickshaw mechanic. The seriously injured Nahid Mia, 25 is a relative of the deceased.

According to police and locals, Sobuj Mia and Kanchan Mia's son Nahid were sitting in the shop around 10:30 pm on Sunday. Suddenly there was a loud explosion which blew the tin shed away.

Sobuj Mia died on the spot. Nahid was seriously injured. Locals and police rescued him and took him to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex. He was later shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital at night for better treatment.

Durgapur police officer in charge Md Shah Noor A Alam said, "The explosives expert team has been informed to find out how the blast took place in the scrap shop. The place is currently cordoned off."

"About 25 percent of Nahid's body was burnt in the explosion. Sobuj Mia's dead body has been sent to Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital for autopsy," he added.
