Today's Bangladesh would not have existed without the great contribution of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed.
"If Bangabandhu had not been born, Bangladesh would not have been born. And if Sheikh Hasina had not been born, we would not have today's Bangladesh. As she survived the assassins in 1975 and 2004, we can live in Bangladesh," said the vice chancellor at a discussion meeting at BSMMU on the occasion of the 75th birthday of Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday.
Bangladesh has moved from a least developed country to a developing country due to the efforts of the prime minister. The UN Committee on Economic and Social Development Policy has officially declared Bangladesh eligible for transition to a developing country, he added.
He further said that the average life expectancy has increased to almost 73 years, maternal and infant mortality rates decreased. Everyone in the national and international arena acknowledges that this achievement is commendable with limited resources and a large population.
Speaking as the chief guest, Amir Hossain Amu, a member of the Advisory Council of Bangladesh Awami League, said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has saved the country from the perilous situation. Food shortage has made Bangladesh self-sufficient. She has also ensured the fundamental rights of the people of the country."
"Without Sheikh Hasina, this country would have been a terrorist region like Pakistan and Afghanistan. At present, Bangladesh is a role model of development in the world as a result of her strong leadership," he added.
"Father of the National Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had to leave newborn Bangladesh too early, but his worthy daughter, turning the grief of losing everything in the family into strength, has taken Bangladesh to a significant position in the world. Therefore, Bangladesh is forever indebted to Bangabandhu for its birth and Sheikh Hasina for its existence," Amir Hossain Amu said further.
Pro Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Prof Md Zahid Hossain, Pro Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof AKM Mosharraf Hossain, Pro Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Soef Uddin Ahmed, faculty deans and other teachers were present on the occasion.
