Eminent personalities we lost in 2020

As the year 2020 comes to an end, everyone cannot help but agree that this was a horribly challenging year. This year saw the demise of some of the most prominent figures of Bangladesh. From artists to business person, many left the world to hopefully be in a better place. It would be impossible to jot down all the eminent personalities that we lost in 2020. But let us take a look at a few.

National Professor Jamilur Reza

Jamilur Reza Choudhury, a renowned civil engineer, professor and researcher, died in his sleep early morning on April 28. He was 77.
 

National Professor Anisuzzaman

Eminent educator, writer, national professor, and luminary Anisuzzaman passed away on May 14 from health complications. The 82-year-old tested positive for Covid-19 after his demise.

Niloufer Manzur

Niloufer Manzur, founder and principal of Sunbeams School died from the novel coronavirus on May 26.

Abdul Monem

Renowned industrialist and founder of Abdul Monem Group, Abdul Monem Khan, passed away on May 31. He was 85. 

Mohammad Nasim

Former health minister Mohammad Nasim passed away on June 13 from Covid-19 complications. He was 72 years old at the time of his demise. 

Kamal Lohani

Eminent journalist and Ekushey Padak winner cultural activist, Kamal Lohani, died from the novel coronavirus infection on the 20 of June.

Latifur Rahman

Business magnet and Transcom Group chairman Latifur Rahman passed away on the first day of July at the age of 75 due to health complications.

Andrew Kishore

Renowned playback legend singer, Andrew Kishore, passed away on the 6 July at his sister's residence after fighting cancer for 10 months.

Sahara Khatun

Former home minister, Sahara Khatun, passed away from health complications on July 10. Born on March 1 in 1943, Sahara Khatun was involved in politics all throughout her academic life. 

Sayeeda Khanam

Sayeeda Khanam, the first female professional photographer of Bangladesh, passed away at the age of 82 on August 18th from old age complications.  

Mrinal Haque

Mrinal Haque, renowned sculptor, passed away on August 22 from some health complications. He had been physically ill for a long time. The sculptor was just 62 years old. 

Mahbubey Alam

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam passed away on September 27. He had been serving the office since 2009, and was the longest-serving attorney general of Bangladesh.

Monsur Ul Karim

Ekushey award winner and  prominent artist, Monsur Ul Karim, passed away on October 5. An artist who  has made outstanding contributions to the country's painting industry. 

Rashid Haider

Liberation War researcher, former director of Bangla Academy and noted writer Rashid Haider passed away on October 13 from old age complications. The "Ekushey Padak" and "Bangla Academy"-winning litterateur was 72 at the time of his demise. 

Rafique-ul Huq

Veteran lawyer and former attorney general, Barrister Rafique-ul Huq, passed away on October 24 at the age of 96 from old- age complications.

Aly Zaker

Aly Zaker, country's eminent actor and director passed away on November 27 at the age of 76. He had been battling cancer for the last 4 years along with various old age complications.

MA Hashem

Partex Group's founding Chairman MA Hashem died of Covid-19 on 24 December. MA Hashem was 78 years old at the time of his death.

Abdul Kader

Renowned actor Abdul Kader, who was diagnosed with stage IV cancer, breathed his last on 26 December. He was 69. Abdul kader had also tested positive for Covid-19 on 21 December.
