Dhaka University (DU) authorities will take legal action if the Dhaka University or its Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman, are ridiculed on social media.
The university authorities have taken this decision due to harsh criticism and sarcastic remarks on Facebook regarding the Vice Chancellor's remark about the low price of food in the Dhaka University Cafeteria and the issuance of a temporary suspension of the Covid-19 test program in its PCR lab.
In a press release on Thursday, the DU authorities said they have recently come to know about the long-running satire on social media about the VC's remarks and the university's Covid-19 PCR testing program.
According to the DU authorities, some responsible quarters have recently been using these 2 incidents in undesirable ways causing harm to the reputation of the university in the national and international arena.
DU authorities said, "The university authorities respect the democratic values of tolerating constructive criticism. At the same time, the authorities are fully aware that the law of the land provides for remedial action if someone deliberately ignores the customs and values of criticism and inflicts personal attacks or defamation on an individual or organization."
The authorities said they are expecting the cooperation of all concerned so that no particular quarter can tarnish the image and dignity of the university by using confusing and fragmented information.
The university authorities alleged that a leading English daily in the country has been presenting 'fragmented and misleading' information about the low price of food at the university's cafeteria and the PCR lab set up for coronavirus tests at the university.
Explaining the 'fragmentary and misleading information' published in the newspaper, it said that two issues have come to the notice of the Dhaka University authorities recently. The issues have already been presented as 'satire' by some on social media. At that time it was not taken into account, given the differing tastes and values of people in society at large.
