Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has said they would restore 13 canals in the new Dhaka north wards.

He told reporters this on Wednesday after visiting Sutivola canal and Kodda canal that run along Bhatara, Satarkul and Badda areas.

These areas are in wards 37, 38, 40 and 41.

The mayor said a project worth Tk4,025 crore had been approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) for infrastructural development in these areas.

"It will be my first priority to create a drainage system along the roads, followed by the expansion of the width of the roads," he said.

Atiqul said, "We have sent a letter to Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) so that they do not endorse any further building construction plans in these areas. I also asked ward councillors in these areas to stay alert in this regard."

Under the project, a wide range of development work, including restoration of 29 kilometres of canals, re-excavation of canals, repair of banks of canals, construction of walkways, and greenery project, will be implemented.

Md Selim Reza, chief executive officer of Dhaka north, Commodore Saidur Rahman, chief waste management officer, and Brigadier General Amirul Islam, chief engineer, were present there among others.
