Dengue claims two more lives

Two people, including a woman, died of dengue fever in Khulna and Mymensingh on Wednesday morning amid the epidemic of the mosquito-borne dengue fever in the country.   

In Khulna, Shahida Begum, 50, wife of Saidur Rahman and a resident of Pirojpur’s Bhandaria upazila, was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital with dengue fever on Tuesday night.

Dr Soilandranath Biswas, resident physician of the hospital, said she had been suffering from the fever for some days.

Six people, including two women, have so far died of dengue in the hospital.    

Meanwhile, in Mymensingh, Hafizur Rahman, 35, a readymade garment worker of Trishal upazila, died while being taken to Dhaka from Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in the morning.

Dr Lakshmi Narayan Majumdar, deputy director of MMCH, said Hafizur returned home after receiving dengue treatment in the hospital.

“But he was rushed to the hospital again on Tuesday night after his condition had deteriorated. Doctors suggested taking him to Dhaka for better treatment,” he said.   

Hafizur died around 5am on his way to Dhaka.

According to government figures, dengue has claimed 52 lives until Monday.

Private sources, however, say the death toll has exceeded 173.

Private hospitals are where 75 percent of dengue deaths has occurred.

More than 64,000 dengue patients have so far been admitted to different hospitals across the country.  Of them, some 59,030 returned home after treatment.

The High Court (HC) on Monday observed that the two city corporations of Dhaka and the government cannot avoid responsibility for failing to contain the spread of dengue.
