Ctg customs seize cigarettes falsely declared as mushrooms

The Chattogram Customs House on Sunday seized two containers of cigarettes which were falsely declared as mushrooms.

Customs sources said Chattogram-based importer Bangla Vina Enterprise declared 17 tonnes (171 cartons) of mushrooms from Malaysia, but that they brought of cigarettes instead.

On Sunday, the shipment's C&F agent had tried to release the goods while the officials were busy celebrating the Customs Day.

Acting on a tip off, the Audit Investigation & Research (AIR) unit of the Chattogram Customs House suspended the release of the goods, still the C&F agents and importers tried to release those.

The incident had surprised many at the Customs House.

Nur-e-Hasna Sanjida Anushua, assistant commissioner of customs said that they would look into the matter.

Neither the Importer Vina Enterprise nor its C&F agent could be reached for comment regarding the matter.
