The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has sent a letter to police headquarters seeking permission to investigate 10 cases filed at different police stations against actress Pori Moni, sacked Awami League leader Helena Jahangir, and six others.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Rab's legal and media wing director, on Monday said, that Rab on Sunday wrote to police headquarters seeking permission to investigate 10 cases.

"If we get the permission, we will investigate the cases with due importance."

Rab sources said they did not want to investigate the cases against two models, Faria Mahbub Piasha and Mariam Akter Mou, as the Detective Branch of police has arrested them.  Rab wants to investigate 10 cases filed against Pori Moni and seven others.

However, seven cases recently filed against two models, Dhallywood actress Pori Moni, film producer Nazrul Islam Raj, and sacked Awami League leader Helena Jahangir, have been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Shafiqul Islam said no list of individuals with close links to actress Pori Moni, or models Faria Mahbub Piasha and Mariam Akhter Mou, is being made.

"Police received information that a vested group was making extortion demands from various individuals who visited the houses of Pori Moni, Piasha, and Mou, threatening to disclose compromising photos or videos of them,"  said the DMP chief, talking to reporters at his office in the capital.

"Two or three businessmen have already sought the intervention of the home minister to get rid of the blackmailers. After gathering the necessary information, police will take action against those extortionists," deputy commissioner (media and PR) Faruq Hossain told The Business Standard.

DMP chief Shafiqul Islam advised the victims to record the phone calls of the extortionists and submit the recordings to local police stations.

So far three businessmen have contacted them seeking protection from the extortionists. In fear of being embarrassed in public, a businessman from Gulshan sought the help of the DMP commissioner, he added.

"It is not illegal to have a relationship with anyone until a case is filed in this regard," the DMP boss said.

Meanwhile, CID high officials on Monday had a meeting at its headquarters with the investigation officers of seven cases being investigated by CID.

A CID source said Pori Moni, Raj, and two others will be produced in court on Tuesday as their four-day remand is over. No decision has been made yet whether a fresh remand for them will be sought.
