Former Superintendent of Police, Babul Akhtar, jailed in the Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case, sought permission to seek treatment at any hospital outside the jail. At the end of the hearing, the court ordered him to be treated as per jail rules.

The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnaz Rahman issued the order around 4pm on Sunday.

Babul Akhtar's lawyer Arifur Rahman said, "Babul Akhtar has lung problems and is suffering from irregular blood pressure. So we applied to the court for permission to treat him at any other hospital outside the jail. The court directed the senior jail superintendent to treat him as per the jail rules."

Chattogram Jail Senior Jail Super, Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, told The Business Standard, "We have a 100-bed hospital in the jail. The court has ordered me to give treatment to Babul Akhter there. Apart from this, if the jail authorities deem it necessary, he might be sent out for treatment in accordance with the rules."

On the morning of 5 June, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and stabbed near her home when she was taking her son to the school bus stop at R Nizam Road under Panchlaish Police Station of the port city.

Babul Akhter, then an SP at police headquarters, filed a murder case with Panchlaish police station for the killing of his wife. Babul Akhter was fired from his job in August of that year following a lot of drama, including interrogation at the intelligence office.

In 2017, the year after the murder, Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain first expressed suspicion that Babul was involved in the murder. He said that everything that Babul has done since the murder was his acting.

In January 2020, the PBI was tasked with investigation of the case filed by Babul Akhter. After that, this sensational case which cause commotion all over the country, began to unravel.

On 11 May, the PBI interrogated Babul Akhtar after taking him into custody. The PBI submitted a 575-page final report of the case to the court on 12 May, suggesting a case be filed against Babul Akhter for his involvement in the murder of his wife.

On the afternoon of the same day (12 May), Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain filed a murder case with the city's Panchlaish police station, accusing eight people, including Babul Akhter. Showing an arrest in that case, the PBI has grilled Babul Akhter in remand.
