Police have arrested eight robbers including a policeman from different parts of Dhaka and Khulna in connection with a 98 bhori gold robbery and kidnapping a man from Keraniganj identifying themselves as the police.
Keraniganj Model Thana police arrested the robbers from Khulna, Ashulia, Savar and other Dhaka Metropolitan (DMP) areas, Dhaka Zila Police Super Asaduzzaman told a press briefing on Monday at his office.
The arrested are Constable Munshi Kamruzzaman, attached to Lalbagh police station in Dhaka, Shafiqul Islam alias Sumon, Md Rahman, Uttam Majumder, Zakir Hossain, Md Sharif, Ananda Pal, and Nahida Nahar Memy.
Police have recovered over 51 bhori of gold and Tk15 lakh from the possession of the robbers and have seized the microbus used in the crime.
SP Asaduzzaman said Borun Ghosh, an employee of Solaiman Jewelers in Singair Thana of Manikganj, came to a jewelry shop in Tantibazar of Old Dhaka on 2 August with eight gold bars (weighing 98 bhori) to make ornaments.
As the shop had closed, Borun was returning to Singair when the robbers in police uniform challenged him in front of Johny Tower in Jinjira for possessing illegal goods, Asaduzzaman said.
The robbers started thrashing Borun, forcing him into a microbus and blindfolding him.
The robbers moved around to various places in Keraniganj and finally dropped him in the Jhilmil Residential Project area after robbing Borun of the gold bars, chalans, and Tk3,000 in cash.
Solaiman Jewelers owner Habu Mia filed a case with Keraniganj Model Police Station on 3 August. Police identified the microbus used in the robbery from CCTV footage and with the help of information technology.
Keraniganj Circle Additional Police Super Sahabuddin Kabir said further interrogation is needed to learn how the constable got involved with the gang of robbers, whether the gang has committed robbery in any other place, and who any other gang members may be.
