Writ petition filed to prevent price hikes centring Eid

A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) to check price hike of essentials centring the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.

Directives have also been sought against those involved in syndicates destabilising the kitchen markets.

Supreme Court lawyer Md Abdul Momin filed the writ on behalf of the Conscious Consumer Society on Thursday.

The secretaries to the Ministry of Food, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Local Government, the director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, and the chairman of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh have been made the defendants of the writ petition.

Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader are likely to hear the petition.

Onion price has recently doubled. Indian onions are being sold at Tk40 in wholesale markets while locally produced onions at Tk50-55. Those were at Tk25 and Tk30 respectively a couple of days ago. The prices of other essentials have also spiked putting the city dwellers in a fix.

Earlier on July 18, the organisation delivered a legal notice to the authorities concerned demanding steps ahead of Eid.
