The Appellate Division has banned lawyer Yunus Ali Akand for next three months from practicing in both the Appellate and High Court divisions of the Supreme Court for making derogatory comments about the judiciary on Facebook.

He was also fined Tk25,000, in default, he will have to serve 15 days in jail.

A bench of seven judges, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order on Monday (October 12th).

This is the first time that a lawyer has been given such a sentence in the country.

Earlier on September 27, lawyer Yunus Ali Akand criticized the virtual court in a Facebook post, following which Additional Attorney General Murad Reza drew court's attention to the post.

Taking the complaint into account, the Appellate Division issued the order and directed BTRC to remove the post and block Yunus Ali's Facebook account.

Later, Yunus Alisigned a bond stating that he will not commit such an act in the future, butthe top court rejected it.

Ruhul Quddus Kajal, secretary of the Bar Association, said that it is a warning to lawyers, adding, "This penalty will be an example so no one has the audacity to criticize the judiciary system on social media.
