HC hearing of writ seeking judicial inquiry into death of Banshkhali workers Monday

On Monday, the High Court (HC) will hear the writ petition filed, seeking a judicial inquiry into the killing of five people in a clash between police and workers of a coal-fired power plant at Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram.
The bench headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim on Sunday ordered the concerned branch of HC to keep the petition in Monday's case list for a hearing. Advocate Syeda Nasreen is to present the petition.
Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a human rights organization, on 22 April filed the writ petition with the HC, seeking a judicial enquiry into the incident and the authorities concerned.
On behalf of ASK, Advocates Z I Khan Panna, Syeda Nasreen, Shahinuzzaman and Nina Goswami submitted the petition.
The writ also sought Tk3 crore in compensation for each deceased worker's family, and Tk2 crore for each injured worker.
In the petition, it also urged the HC to ask the government officials concerned to withdraw the case filed against the workers, to file criminal cases against the real culprits, to ensure worker rights to life, property, livelihood, and security.
In the writ petition, the Home, Law, Industry and Commerce Secretaries, the Inspector General of Police, and others have been made defendants.
Earlier on 18 April, ASK served a legal notice to the authorities concerned, asking for appropriate action to be taken against those involved in the incident.
On 17 April, five workers were killed and 21 others injured during a clash with police at an under-construction power plant.
Later, another worker died of bullet injuries on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Two cases have been filed against more than 2,500 people over Saturday's clash at the Gandamara coal-fired power plant in Chattogram's Banshkhali upazila that left five workers dead.
Police lodged a case against 2,500 unnamed people on allegations of attack and obstruction in performance of duties.
The power plant's coordinator Faruk Ahmed separately filed another case against 70 people, mentioning 22 names, alleging vandalism, arson, and attack.
