Heavy traffic pressure has caused massive congestion at Airport Road and adjacent areas in the capital on Saturday.

The unprecedented tailbacks on both sides of the road made the commuters suffer in Shewra Bazar, Abdullahpur, Uttara and other important sections.

According to a recent notice by the Road, Transport and Bridges Ministry, four lanes of Salehpur bridge on Dhaka-Savar route has been closed for reparations.

The tailback may have been caused by the increased flow of vehicles travelling via Airport road as an alternative, some commuters think. The nearly 12 km tailback spanned to Tongi Silmun Bus Stop.

"Incoming traffic to Dhaka is quite okay. But those who are heading towards Uttara and also is going to Tongi-Gazipur have to face the long tailback," MD Abdullah, assistant commissioner (traffic) Airport zone told TBS.

"The fire at Tongi slum and also the renovation of a Dhaka-Savar road bridge caused the traffic jam. Due to the bridge renovation work in Dhaka-Savar road, it now turns into two lanes from four. And also the vehicles were directed to ply on different routes like Uttara," he added.
