Waterlogging and road crashes have resulted in heavy traffic congestion on Airport Road from Uttara to the city centre, after torrential thunder-shower drenched the city earlier in the morning.

"The gridlock has been prolonged by an accident that took place near the airport," said Ashfaq Ahmed, assistant commissioner of the Mohakhali traffic zone.

Till 6 am Tuesday, the capital saw rainfall of 21 mm in 24 hours, according to the met office.

Mirajur Rahman Patwary, a regular commuter on Airport road told The Business Standard, "I started from Uttara at 9.30 am for Banani and couldn't even cross Kuril Bishwa Road after an hour."

Parts of the road between Kurmitola Golf Club and Nikunja has been submerged under the knee to waist-deep rainwater resulting in gridlock in the area.

"Heavy rain has caused waterlog at different points of the city," said airport traffic zone Assistant Commissioner Ashiq Rahman, adding, "Private cars couldn't move in the 2-3 feet high rainwater that submerged the roads and entailed heavy traffic congestion."

Meanwhile, waterlogging has been reported in different areas of the capitals, i.e. Panthapath, Green Road, Kalabagan, Kathalbagan, Hatirpul, Madhubag, Mirpur, Kalshi, and Magbazar.

Rainwater has seeped into many shops and houses in those locations.
