A two-day national conference on preventing and countering violent extremism began in Dhaka on Monday
Speakers at a national conference stressed the need for a broad approach to prevent violent extremism throughout the world.
The two-day conference on preventing and countering violent extremism began on Monday at International Convention City in Bashundhara, Dhaka.
Bangladesh Police's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, the United States Embassy and the United Nations have been jointly organising the event.
Speaker of Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, International Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister Dr Gowher Rizvi, CTTC chief Monirul Islam, UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Miller were present at the inaugural ceremony.
They urged researchers, development partners, politicians, law enforcement agencies and civil society members to assist in the fight against violent extremism.
Representatives from Bangladesh government, civil society and academic institutions have been taking part at the conference.
The experts will unveil their ideas and efforts to prevent extremism in Bangladesh. They will also prepare a draft national strategy for countering violent extremism to submit it to the government of Bangladesh.
