A bill titled 'Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna Bill, 2020 was placed in Parliament on Tuesday, aiming to expand the facilities of medical education, research and healthcare services in Khulna division.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque placed the Bill and it was sent to the respective Parliamentary Standing Committee for further scrutiny.

The Committee was asked to submit its report within seven days.

The bill was placed as it is essential to set up a medical university in Khulna division to create postgraduate physicians and medical researchers as well as improve the quality of medical education in the region.

The bill has been formulated keeping similarities with the laws of Rajshahi, Chattogram and Sylhet medical universities.

The President will be the chancellor of the proposed medical university.

All government and private medical, dental and nursing colleges and institutes, and other institutes related to medical education in Khulna division will be affiliated to the university.

The move came as part of the government's plan to set up a medical university in each division of the country.

In the bill, research, expansion of higher education and improvement of the standards of healthcare services were given special importance.
