Several leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) locked up the main gate of the residence of Rajshahi University (RU) Vice-Chancellor seeking jobs on Monday night.

The protesters started a sit-in programme after 9pm and locked the residence of VC Professor M Abdus Sobhan.

According to a source at Rajshahi University, a disable man, Jalal Bhuiyan, got a job at the university's registrar office on Monday.

After hearing the news, other job seekers started gathering in front of VC's house.

Later, a group of 6 including university RU BCL president Golam Kibriya met the VC. Then, they locked up the VC's house as the vice-chancellor couldn't assure them of jobs.

Citing a ban from the Ministry of Education, The VC told them it wouldn't be possible to give them jobs at the moment.

The mentioned ban came on 10 December in a letter from the Ministry of Education where the Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University was directed to suspend all recruitment processes at the university.

Requesting anonymity, two activists told The Business Standard, "The Vice-Chancellor had been assuring us of jobs for a long time but has not kept his word. The recruitment process is ongoing and even today one was hired."

When asked, Golam Kibria, branch president of Chhatra League said, "We went to meet the Vice-Chancellor after coming across the news of the latest appointment at the registrar's office. We asked him the reason for not appointing BCL leaders and workers."

VC Professor M Abdus Sobhan said "We received a letter from the prime minister office for appointing a disabled person who got a job. I am now unable to appoint any other person as the education ministry barred all sorts of appointments at the Rajshahi University campus."
