Bagerhat district cricket team’s former captain dies in road accident

Rezwanul Islam Ridu, 38, the former captain of Bagerhat district cricket team, was killed in a road accident at Jagrapur Bazar of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila this morning.

According to reports, a rice-laden truck hit Rezwanul's motorcycle from behind near Kulia Dair on the Bagerhat-Rupsa old road.

The truck fell into a ditch soon after crashing against the motorcycle.

KM Azizul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station, said the body of the deceased was recovered.

"The truck loaded with rice is still lying in the ditch and police are making arrangements to seize the truck. Legal action is also under way," added Azizul Islam.

After retiring from the game, Rezwanul ran a grocery shop at the corner of Circuit House at Dashani of Bagerhat town.

He was on his way back after purchasing the goods for the shop when the accident happened.

Besides serving as the long time captain of the team, Rezwanul also played for Bangladesh Boys Club in Dhaka.

He leaves behind his wife, a daughter and a son.

Sheikh Haider Ali Babu, co-president of Bagerhat District Sports Association, said Rezwanul was a very clean player.

His role in forming the Bagerhat district team was commendable and his sudden death was a huge loss for the team, Babu added.
