PM Sheikh Hasina, then the leader of the opposition party, was giving her speech in a public meeting on protesting attacks against the party's workers in Sylhet at Bangabandhu Avenue, Dhaka. There were around 20,000 people in the rally. As she finished her speech, 13 grenades were thrown into the crowd from nearby rooftops which killed at least 16 people on spot. Later the death toll reached 24. She survived with injuries in her ear.
